The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order
of Melchizedek" (Psalm 110:4).
RSV
Did you ever cross your heart and hope to die? Did you ever swear on a
stack of Bibles? Do you remember any childhood pacts to be best friends forever?
Jesus says any such oaths are unnecessary. Our yes should be yes and our no
should be no. In other words, we should be people known so much for honesty
and integrity that anything beyond our word wouldn't be required.
The writer of the book of Hebrews quotes Psalm 110:4 to show that Jesus is
the indestructible, eternal high priest. He also makes the point that God cannot
lie; therefore, any oath He has taken can be trusted throughout eternity. In the
same way, any promise He has given stands forever.
The Lord will not change His mind. He has redeemed you and empowered
you to serve Him as a minister of the new covenant. The Lord had given His
word that He will be with you no matter what difficulty comes your way. It is
His oath, His promise to you. Are God's promises sufficient for you?
